It’s All In The Back-Beat—What does Appalachian music, Cajun music have to do with West African polyrhythmic music? This lecture traces and demonstrates not only the connection of African and American musics but shows that the underlying structure of virtually all American is in fact African. It’s all in the back-beat….
Music Pedagogy-Is There a Heirarchy We Should Be Teaching? —- Of the three elements of music, Rhythm, Melody and Harmony, only one is essential to music production: Rhythm. One can make music without Melody and Harmony (All of the drumming of West Africa, for example) but one cannot make music without Rhythm. It is the structure and skeleton that all melody is pinned upon. Certain music lends itself to the exploration of this essensial element. West African and Afro-Cuban music, with their interlocking and interdependent rhythms, are the perfect vehicle to get at the heart of music. This lecture will explore the theory behind this pedagogy as well as teach some of these rhythms in order to demonstrate their effectiveness at building and strengthening core musicianship.
